What is Important in an HDTV?

When looking at HDTVs, we think that the following are the criteria most important purchases for your purchase:
What is your budget?
I mean not only for the TV, but also for every attached home theater surround-sound system, special remote controls, automatic curtain, lighting controls, and so on. It makes a big difference if you’re building a home theater HDTV, or just put a TV on the dresser in the bedroom.

What size do you need?
No, not bigger is always better. You can have a TV that is too large for your space, or too small for your use. There is an optimum range based on where you will place the TV and where you plan to sit. These first two points in size and budget, will do a lot to narrow your choices before arriving at any of the techniques or the criteria used, so that they are important to nail first. If you want to fill a wall of 8 feet with the image, you’re not going to do with anything but a front-projection system.

What are you going to do with it?
You’re going to watch a lot of sports events? Film? Video games? Believe it or not, some types of high definition televisions are best with certain types of content. Sports fanatics will find a very bright DLP projection system best for their tastes, everything else is equal, while people who watch CNN all day want to avoid plasma screen displays in a big way, because of burn-in effects of static images (more later).

What connects to it?
If you already have an investment in a decent A/V gear, then, that might dictate the type of gear by some numbers Interfaces or ports on your HDTV, like this: If you have an entertainment system designed around, centralized switching video through a receiver to switch between video sources and destinations, then you’re going to need a receiver capable of passing HDTV content. This could mean a new handset, which can be expensive and cut into your budget. Do you need a HDTV tuner or just a get-ready display, meaning HDTV tuner from your cable or satellite company?

What neat features do you want?
It’s easy to be swayed by neat features, but in many implementations, it is inaccessible for several reasons. For example, if you set the system so that all signals are available in more than a cable connection, you may not be able dual use of the TV-channel features, you could count on your cable box or satellite for that. Still, the features are important for all of us, and we’ll tell you what’s most important.
