What Cables Do I Need To Connect New Samsung Hdtv?

I just bought my first HDTV and am uncertain about how to set it up with my FIOS DVR and DVD player. Do I need both HDMI cables and composite video cables?

Here is the break down on video quality/cable type listed from best quality to worst
    High Definition
    1. HDMI (or DVI-D) up to >1080p
    (max: 1920×1080 progressive scan, digital)
    2. Component cable (R/G/B separated) up to 1080i/720p
    (max: 1920×1080 interlaced, analog)
    Standard Definition
    3. S-Video (approx: 700×486 interlaced, analog)
    4. Composite/RCA (approx: 483X525 interlaced, analog)
For the Standard Definition cables the resolutions listed are approximations of the quality you’ll get once the HDTV (or digital cable box) performs the signal conversion to digital, the data is analog so it’s never absolute pixels.
So it’s best to use HDMI whenever possible, but component cables will also give you HD picture quality.

Get all HDMI cables if you can. The FIOS will definitely have HDMI output, and that is all you need for both video and audio. No other cables necessary.
The DVD player may or may not have HDMI out depending on what kind of DVD player it is and how old it is.
If the DVD player doesn’t have an HDMI out, then get component video cables (red, blue, green) plus analog audio (red/white).
If the DVD player doesn’t have component video out, then just use composite video (yellow) plus analog audio (red/white). Another option is S-Video, but you probably won’t see much improvement over plain old composite.
